Mauldin Chiropractic Effective for Cervicogenic Headache

Mauldin Chiropractic Effective for Cervicogenic Headache

We see a lot of men and women with headaches in our Mauldin office, and Dr. Izquierdo has been able to aid many of them. Additionally, the World Health Organization (WHO) estimates that one half of all adults deal with some kind of headache problems, so this really isn’t shocking. One of the most frequent types of headaches which our patients have problems with is cervicogenic headache which, thankfully, chiropractic can commonly help.

What is a Cervicogenic Headache?

A cervicogenic headache is one that stems from a problem in the cervical spine. It could be as a result of an issue with either the spine itself (specifically, the vertebrae, joints, or discs), or it can be attributable to a problem in the muscles and tendons of your neck. This dysfunction in your spine contributes to compression or irritation of the spinal nerves, which can result in headache pain.

How can you find out if the headache you are experiencing is a cervicogenic headache? Apart from obtaining a diagnosis from a healthcare professional, a common symptom of cervicogenic headaches is tenderness or pain in your neck. This is occasionally combined with pain in the back of your head or between your shoulder blades.

How Chiropractic Helps

Since cervicogenic headaches will not go away until whatever problem is triggering them is corrected, it is important to receive treatment rather than just trying to "wait it out." Chiropractic care is an excellent solution, and one that can provide a great deal of headache pain relief.

In one study reported in Chiropractic & Osteopathy, researchers evaluated 80 people who had recurrent cervicogenic headaches. Fifty percent were given chiropractic care and the other half engaged in light massage therapy. Each participant was evaluated 12 and 24 weeks after the procedures and it was discovered that chiropractic delivered the best effects.

Specifically, this study found that chiropractic adjustments gave patients more significant pain relief and diminished the number of headaches that occurred. What's more, it also lessened the disability that resulted from these painful headaches.
