Chiropractic Helps Relieve Herniated Disc Problems

Mauldin chiropractic disc herniation treatmentUnfortunately, a large number of our Mauldin patients are familiar with the pain caused by a herniated disc all too well. On a positive note, Dr. Izquierdo has helped many people with disc pain, and a number of research studies have confirmed that chiropractic care can help people recover from this kind of problem.

Research on Chiropractic and Disc Herniations

In one study, a group of doctors from Switzerland selected 148 patients who were dealing with pain in their lower back and legs due to a disc herniation (which was confirmed through magnetic resonance imaging, or MRI). Each individual then received chiropractic adjustments that focused on the location of his or her disc herniation.

Data was gathered after the initial treatment session at set intervals--namely, 2 weeks, 4 weeks, 12 weeks, 6 months, and 1 year--to establish what type of short-term and long-term effects, if any, chiropractic care offers when it comes to resolving this particular problem. Among the information obtained was the individual's self-reported changes in both lumbar and leg pain.

The authors found that, as a whole, the study participants reported "significant improvement" for both types of pain every time the results were collected. In fact, over 90% of the individuals stated that their pain "improved" within the first three months, with 88% still citing improvement one year after their first treatment session.

Even those patients who were defined as "chronic" still reported an improvement in pain at a rate of 89% one year beyond when treatment first began. This is the same positive result that was found in the following case study.

Disc Herniation and Chiropractic: A Case Study

In this paper, a 26-year-old male had presented with disc herniation symptoms such as pain in the lower back, left leg, and left groin area, along with left foot drop and muscle weakness. He had suffered with these issues for more than two years after sustaining a sports injury, and his disc herniation was confirmed via MRI.

After receiving chiropractic, "The patient responded favorably and his multi-symptom complex resolved within 90 days of treatment." Furthermore, the patient was still enjoying relief one year after the chiropractic intervention.

Studies like these show how useful chiropractic can be when it comes to alleviating herniated disc pain and reducing the symptoms they produce. So, if you are suffering from back ache caused by a herniated disc and wish to find some relief, chiropractic can be an effective solution.

Natural Carpal Tunnel Treatment with Chiropractic

Mauldin natural carpal tunnel treatmentDr. Izquierdo sees a lot of people struggling with carpal tunnel syndrome in our busy Mauldin chiropractic practice. While some people think that the origin of this wrist-related pain is muscular, it's really a syndrome that stems from the nerves--and not just the nerves in your hands.

Research Proves Chiropractic Helps With Carpal Tunnel Syndrome

Recent research published in the Journal of Orthopaedic & Sports Physical Therapy evaluated 71 women between the ages of 35 and 59 who were diagnosed with carpal tunnel syndrome. Upon investigating the subjects' neck range of motion, the authors discovered that the patients had less cervical mobility when compared to a healthy control group.

Furthermore, they also observed that the level of the women's reported carpal tunnel discomfort was related to the lateral flexion of the cervical spine. In other words, the less range of motion in the neck, the higher the level of pain.

This research is extremely important, as you can't effectively treat a condition until you fully understand its source. By understanding that the root of carpal tunnel symptoms is in the neck, this means that natural approaches such as chiropractic can often restore normal function, eliminating the need for risky operations.

Chiropractic and Medical Care: An Effective Combination

Mauldin back pain treatmentWe see many people with back pain in our Mauldin office, and Dr. Izquierdo has been able to help a lot of them get relief with chiropractic care. However, recovering from back problems doesn't necessarily mean having to make a choice between chiropractic care and medical therapy, as many individuals use both types of care with great results.

Research Confirms Chiropractic and Medical Care Work Well with Each Other

In a report published by the medical journal Spine experts1 looked at a group of active-duty military personnel between the ages of 18 and 35 who reported both acute soreness and limited function due to back symptoms. Some of the patients received treatment via standard medical therapy, while the remainder were given chiropractic adjustments together with standard medical care, as the authors wanted to determine which patients fared better.

The authors found that the patients who got standard medical care along with chiropractic care scored "significantly better" than the group that received medical care alone; 73% reported positive benefits compared to just 17% of the medical treatment only group who indicated the same amount of improvement. This was true regarding both pain and level of function at the two- and four-week marks.

Thus, incorporating these two forms of care can greatly benefit you--the patient--offering advantages when compared to medical care alone. However, while chiropractic care and medicine can work alongside each other, chiropractic offers some unique advantages over medical treatment.

Where Chiropractic Care Is Successful

Although it may seem as if each method plays a 50-50 role, there is one significant advantage that chiropractic has over medical treatment and that is in patient satisfaction. In fact, a study done at UCLA2 that was printed in the American Journal of Public Health reports that, on average, chiropractic patients are generally more satisfied with their recovery than patients undergoing medical treatment.

According to the experts, the main aspects that patients preferred over medical treatment were "self-care advice and explanation of treatment." This isn't unexpected, as chiropractors tend to spend much more time consulting with their patients as to how they can better their health on their own, as well as explaining more thoroughly what to expect from chiropractic.

Chiropractic Offers a Non-Invasive Approach

Certainly, the techniques associated with chiropractic are very different than those provided with medical therapy, but a large amount of the difference is the fact that chiropractic is a natural approach to health and well-being. Rather than focusing on just relieving the symptoms, chiropractic care involves searching for the root cause of your pain, which often means greater improvement as you are addressing the problem at its source.

In addition, while medication is sometimes helpful for managing certain conditions, many health issues respond well to natural forms of treatment like chiropractic care. This means fewer negative responses to medications and longer-lasting results.

You don't have to deal with back pain or other health issues. Give our Mauldin office a call today at (864) 627-4325. We'll do our best to help you get and continue to be free from back pain.

Shoulder Pain and Auto Injury

If you have shoulder pain after an auto collision, you're not alone. Dr. Izquierdo sees this type of problem often in our Mauldin office. Chiropractic can be very helpful for shoulder pain symptoms after a crash. Let's see what causes shoulder pain and why chiropractic works.

There are at least two ways that you can get shoulder pain after a crash: by direct injury to the shoulder or by radiating pain from the neck.

Direct damage can be caused by striking your shoulder on a hard object in the car during the crash, or can occur if you have a tight grip on the steering wheel during a rear end impact. With this type of injury, you'll often be aware of the pain soon after the crash.

More frequently, Dr. Izquierdo finds that shoulder or arm pain doesn't immediately appear after a collision, but begins a few days or weeks after the accident. This type of shoulder discomfort actually starts in the neck. Injured muscles or ligaments in your spine can squeeze nerves in your neck, causing numbness, tingling, or pain in your shoulder, elbow, or wrist.

We've worked with many types of shoulder pain in our Mauldin office. This process involves chiropractic adjustments to restore your spine's natural flexibility and exercises that strengthen your neck and shoulder.

If you've been injured in a car crash and you're struggling with shoulder pain, Dr. Izquierdo is here to help. First, we'll do a careful evaluation to establish the root cause of your pain, and then decide how to restore your body's natural functioning. Call us today at (864) 627-4325 if you have questions or would like to make an appointment.

Asthma Relief with Chiropractic

Mauldin asthma care with chiropracticAsthma is a huge concern for many people in Mauldin and for a society as a whole, since the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reports that this condition currently affects almost 19 million adults and 7 million children in the US. A full-blown asthma attack likely means a hospital visit. Fortunately, Dr. Izquierdo has helped many people in Mauldin get relief from asthma symptoms.

Research Supports Chiropractic Helps With Asthma

The medical literature verifies what we see in our office. For instance, a study published in Clinical and Experimental Allergy assessed 31 adult asthma patients after receiving four weeks of chiropractic adjustments. The researchers found that the patients who received chiropractic adjustments had a 34% decrease in asthma symptoms.

The Journal of Manipulative and Physiological Therapeutics printed another asthma-based study, except this one involved children. In this report, the 36 kids ranged from 6 to 17 years in age and their asthma was regarded as either mild or moderate in severity.

After 12 weeks of chiropractic adjustments, as a whole, the patients reported a higher quality of life and a decreased level of severity. As a bonus, they also reported that they relied less on their bronchodilator and these positive effects lasted one year after chiropractic care was complete.

How Safe is Chiropractic?

Mauldin Chiropractic for familiesWe tend to a large number of patients in our Mauldin office, and Dr. Izquierdo has helped countless people overcome a range of health problems. Even so, the primary issue that seems to stop many men and women from pursuing care is whether or not chiropractic care is safe. Fortunately, according to three different studies (out of many on the issue), the answer to this concern is a clear: "Yes! Chiropractic is safe!"

Chiropractic is Safe, According to Australian Study

The first study(1) was published in Spine and involved 183 men and women between the ages of 20 and 85. Each participant reported suffering from spine-related pain, and half of the individuals received real chiropractic adjustments whereas the remaining patients received two sham chiropractic treatments. Information was gathered after each real or fake adjustment to discover whether or not any unpleasant reactions were caused by the actual chiropractic treatments.

The doctors found that nobody reported any serious negative side effects in any way after receiving one or two sessions of chiropractic care. Some individuals did report that they experienced a headache (9% of patients) or muscle stiffness (37%) after treatment, but the results were not of a serious nature.

Nationwide Survey Reports that Chiropractic is Safe

The second study(2), also published in the distinguished journal, Spine, was done in an effort to establish the safety of chiropractic care. The study group was much larger as it involved just under 20,000 people. Each participant received chiropractic adjustments of the cervical spine, with over 50,000 total adjustments for all patients.

Once again, the investigators found no serious adverse side effects. The experts computed the risk of total side effects to be approximately 6 out of every 10,000 consultations or every 100,000 treatment sessions. And, just as with the first study, some volunteers did report non-serious, milder, side effects such as dizziness (16 out of every 1,000 treatment consultations and 15 out of every 1,000 treatment sessions) or a headache (4%), and this prompted the authors to conclude that "the risk of a serious adverse event, immediately or up to 7 days after treatment, was low to very low."

Chiropractic Is Safe for Kids

This third study(3) is unique from the previous two reports, as it focuses on the safety of chiropractic care for kids. In this case, researchers investigated data reported by both chiropractors and parents involving 816 children who participated in 7,173 chiropractic adjustments.

Out of 5,438 chiropractic visits made for the children, chiropractors answering the survey reported only three cases where there were negative side effects. When parents were questioned, they indicated only two adverse side effects out of 1,735 visits. Furthermore, both chiropractors and parents reported "a high rate of improvement with respect to the children's presenting complaints."

Based on studies like these, chiropractic has been judged safe and effective for everyone. To learn what chiropractic care can do for you, call our Mauldin clinic and make an appointment today at (864) 627-4325.

Let's look at how neck pain is caused by a crash and how Dr. Izquierdo can help you.

It's not surprising that neck pain is the most common problem experienced after an auto injury. Even in a car crash, your head is rapidly thrown back and forth, so it's not surprising that neck pain is the most common symptom from this type of injury. Your neck is subjected to very high forces during a crash, so it's not surprising that neck pain is so common from this type of injury. During even a low speed wreck, your head is exposed to extremely rapid acceleration. In such collisions, a head that normally weighs about 10 pounds can instantly weigh eight times as much. This force exerts a serious strain on the tissues of the neck. The bones of your spinal column are held together with strong bands of tissue called ligaments, and these ligaments provide stability for your neck. These ligaments can be sprained during a car crash, just as the ligaments in your ankle can be sprained. A sprain means that the ligament is stretched or torn.

When you experience a sprained ligament, the injured tissues gets swollen and painful, and that's what happens after a car crash. Your chiropractor helps by increasing movement in the injured area, which helps the ligaments heal and helps decrease scar tissue.

Back Pain and Car Crashes

Back Pain is a common problem after an auto injury, and it's something that Dr. Izquierdo sees frequently in our Mauldin office. Your chiropractor can be very helpful for back pain symptoms after a crash. Let's see what causes back pain and why chiropractic works.

During a rear-end auto collision, your car and car seat are quickly accelerated forward against your body. Since car seats don't perfectly align with the curvature of your back, the car seat can put uneven force on your back. This can cause some of your spinal vertebrae to move in one direction while an adjacent vertebrae might move in another direction. This differential motion can sprain or strain the structures that hold your spine together. This type of injury can cause chronic back pain if not treated promptly. Fortunately, chiropractic is one of the most effective ways to treat back pain.

Dr. Izquierdo has been helping patients in Mauldin since 1989, so we know what you're living with. We're here to help you, too.
